The United States Department of Defense announced on Tuesday that it has begun deploying components of an advanced anti-missile system to Israel, with the first elements arriving on Monday.
According to Pentagon spokesperson Major General Pat Ryder, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system is being sent to bolster Israel’s air defences.
Ryder stated that additional U.S. military personnel and THAAD battery components would continue to arrive in Israel over the coming days.
The Pentagon expects the battery to be fully operational in the near future. However, citing operational security concerns, Ryder declined to provide specific timelines for the system’s complete deployment and activation.
The THAAD system is designed to intercept and destroy short- and medium-range ballistic missiles during their terminal phase of flight.
