Trump blasts UK’s Chagos handover as ‘great stupidity’ that emboldens China, Russia

Relevant News

President Donald Trump has attacked Britain’s planned handover of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, calling the decision “an act of great stupidity” that signals weakness to China and Russia, as reported by The BBC.

In a Truth Social post, Trump criticised the UK’s plan to cede sovereignty of Diego Garcia, which hosts a vital US military base. He questioned why Britain would surrender such strategically important territory without justification.

Trump said Beijing and Moscow would view the move as weakness, claiming his administration had restored American strength and international respect after one year in office.

The president linked the Chagos deal to his push for the US to acquire Greenland, arguing Britain’s decision provided additional national security grounds for the acquisition. He urged Denmark and European allies to “do the right thing”.

The intervention marks a reversal from last year, when Trump indicated he would support the UK’s deal to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
