Several people under observation for Hantavirus in three US states

A number of American citizens in at least three states are under medical observation for possible hantavirus infection, following a deadly outbreak on the Dutch luxury cruise liner MV Hondius in the past week.

According to US media, none of the individuals under observation have not shown any symptoms of the virus.

Reuters was not able to confirm the report from independent sources, but did note that these might have been individuals who disembarked from the cruise ship on another port, then returning to the US.

Meanwhile, three people in a serious condition who were evacuated from the MV Hondius have arrived in the Netherlands for treatment, operator Oceanwide Expeditions has said.

The three evacuees were British, Dutch and German. Oceanwide Expeditions said the German evacuee was “closely associated” with a German woman who died on board the ship on 2 May.

Two other people also lost their lives on the ship, as confirmed by WHO.

The cruise liner has now docked at Spain’s Canary Islands after being anchored for three days near Cape Verde, an archipelago nation off the West African coast.

Spanish authorities had initially refused to grant permission, leaving passengers stranded.
