A Russian drone struck a passenger train on Ukraine’s border with NATO member Poland on Sunday, just 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) from the Polish border, Ukraine’s railway operator said, Reuters reported. The attack came shortly after former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European diplomats had travelled on the same line aboard a diplomatic train.
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Monday the attack was meant to scare Western countries supporting Ukraine. “I think we should act the opposite. We should show that we are there for Ukraine and we are not scared,” she told reporters in Rovaniemi, Finland, where she was attending a summit on Arctic strategy.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, speaking at the same summit, said the strike was carried out to intimidate and divide Europeans.
Asked to comment on reports of the strike, the Kremlin said the Russian army operated across Ukrainian territory and would continue to do so.
