Cyprus’s housing scheme for refugees faces delays and potential complications, Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou told a parliamentary committee.
The “Ktizo” (Build) Scheme, aimed at demolishing and reconstructing 19 apartment buildings, lacks coordinators for four projects, risking delays beyond the 18-month period during which the government covers part of beneficiaries’ rent.
Ioannou confirmed that 40 beneficiaries not participating in the programme have yet to receive the promised compensation. He acknowledged a delay in this process, stating that letters requesting necessary documentation for fund disbursement would be sent, potentially causing further months-long delays.
Of the 19 projects, tenders have been received for four, with construction possibly starting in October for these and four additional buildings. Tender documents are ready for eight more, while some remain without appointed coordinators.
The minister reported that €975,000 will be provided from private donations to assist 95 owners unable to afford their share of contributions.
The state has already paid €1.5 million, or €112,000 monthly, to cover partial rent for temporary accommodation during construction.
Fifteen out of 20 apartment buildings have been fully evacuated, with seven beneficiaries in five buildings refusing to leave.
Member of Parliament Rita Supermann alleged threats by public officials to refugees, including an incident involving an elderly woman being warned about forceful eviction.
