Consumer Protection issues warnings ahead of Black Friday sales

Consumer protection bodies in Cyprus are urging shoppers to exercise caution as retailers gear up for Black Friday sales this week.

The Consumer Protection Service of the Ministry of Commerce has issued guidance in response to the surge in promotional announcements and advertisements from businesses, with the Cyprus Consumers Association also releasing similar recommendations.

In its statement, the Consumer Protection Service advised against making purchases solely based on discounts, encouraging consumers to research product specifications thoroughly before buying.

The agency emphasised the importance of using the internet not only for shopping but also for comparing prices, finding alternative products, and reading customer reviews. They stressed that price should not be the sole deciding factor.

Meanwhile, the Cyprus Consumers Association recommended that shoppers track prices of desired items ahead of both Black Friday and Cyber Monday to accurately assess the true value of advertised discounts.

The association specifically warned against purchasing items, regardless of attractive pricing, from online retailers with questionable website legitimacy.

For online platform purchases, both bodies recommended that consumers research product reviews and compare prices across different suppliers before making final decisions.
