The Cyprus Consumers Association has released thirteen recommendations for Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping.
Key guidelines include researching prices beforehand to verify genuine discounts, avoiding suspicious online retailers lacking proper contact details, and being wary of extremely high discounts that may be misleading or limited in scope.
The association warns against purchasing toys and cosmetics from international platforms, citing a February 2024 study where 18 out of 19 toys bought from TEMU failed EU safety standards.
Additional recommendations cover checking return policies, obtaining receipts, and understanding online purchase rights, including the 14-day cooling-off period for EU purchases. The group emphasises this right may not apply to purchases from non-EU platforms.
The guidance also suggests researching product reviews, verifying seller reliability, and checking subscription terms when signing up for promotional newsletters.
For consumer protection, shoppers are advised to verify whether businesses participate in alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, including the association’s own consumer dispute service.
