A court on Friday gave a 32-year-old man from Limassol district a three-month prison sentence, suspended for three years, and fined him 500 euros after 702 plucked wild birds and other birds, including ambelopoulia (songbirds), were found at his home.

The birds were found during a check at the man’s home on 30 October 2025. Along with the 702 plucked birds, he had 13 dead wild birds, 12 ambelopoulia and a thrush, and three live birds, two goldfinches and a quail.

He faced two charges. The first was possession of wild birds whose hunting and capture is prohibited, in breach of the Protection and Management of Wild Birds and Game Law 152(I)/2003, as amended. The second was illegal possession of game, for keeping the two goldfinches and the quail in captivity at his home.

The court imposed the suspended prison sentence on the first charge and the 500-euro fine on the second.

In setting the sentence, it took into account the man’s clean criminal record, his immediate admission, his young age and the fact that he had not previously come to the attention of the authorities.
