The UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, will host President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman for a three-way meeting on the Cyprus problem on Monday, the United Nations announced, as Christodoulides said specific announcements may come over the weekend.

The meeting will take place at 11am on 9 November at the residence of the UN Chief of Mission in the UN protected area, the UN in Cyprus said in a press release.

Christodoulides said he spoke to Holguin by phone on Thursday morning. Based on the information so far, the process appears to point to positive developments, he said, adding that the sides are now awaiting final answers. Holguin had told him there may be specific announcements over the weekend.

The Secretary-General is being kept informed throughout, he said, adding that he sincerely hoped positive developments would be announced.

Asked whether progress was expected on crossing points, Christodoulides recalled that the effort launched immediately after the Secretary-General’s visit to Cyprus covered methodology, substance and confidence-building measures, and said the discussion was broader.

He said the anxiety and desire of the Cypriot people were fully justified, and that he was working in that direction by continually submitting proposals and approaches which, he believed, “if there is political will, can lead us to a resumption of the talks”.
