A search of Savvopoulos beach in Dhekelia found no further human remains after part of a human skull was discovered there on Wednesday. Tests to establish the person’s sex and estimated time of death are expected to take time.
A member of the public walking on the beach alerted the Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) Police at midday on Wednesday after finding something that resembled a human bone. Officers from the SBA Criminal Investigation Department (CID) went to the scene and confirmed it was part of the back of a human skull, which is believed to have washed up from the sea.
The scene was cordoned off and the beach searched, and an anthropologist was called to inspect the find. Specialist tests will follow.
The British Bases are expected to work with the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus on the case, and data on people reported missing years ago and never found will be sought.
The Bases said there was no further information so far on the bone’s origin, how old it is, or when and in what circumstances it was found.
There have been shipwrecks in the wider area involving boats carrying migrants from Syria and Lebanon, some of whom remain missing.
