Limassol traffic police are still searching for the racing car used in a wedding-day drift at the Linopetra roundabout on Saturday. Limassol District Court on Tuesday remanded the groom, aged 36, and his best man in custody for two days, and the car body the groom handed in on Monday appears, from examinations so far, not to match the car seen in the video.
The body has no engine, gearbox, crown wheel, steering wheel, seats, lights, bumpers, tyres or braking system. It also has a shattered windscreen and different registration numbers.
The groom’s account
Under questioning, the groom said his wedding ceremony ended at about 6.10pm on Saturday, 31 October, at a church in Agios Athanasios. Afterwards, he said, friends gathered at his home and decided to drift at the Agios Athanasios roundabout in a racing car. He then loaded the car onto a tow truck and took it to the roundabout.
There, he said, he blocked the western entrance on the Mesa Geitonia side by parking his tow truck in front of it. A second tow truck he owned, driven by someone else, was parked elsewhere. The other entrances and exits were blocked by further tow trucks and vehicles, whose drivers have not yet been identified.
The groom suggested that his best man, who was at the scene, drive the racing car, which the best man allegedly did for about five minutes. Afterwards, the groom loaded the car back onto his tow truck and took it home, before leaving with his wife for the reception.
Investigation
Three statements have been taken so far, and several more are expected from people close to the two suspects and their families, and from their business associates. Police plan to search car yards that the two men work with, and will examine CCTV footage to establish whether the car was taken to the Agios Athanasios roundabout on a tow truck. They are also looking for two drivers of vehicle-transport tow trucks.
