The hunting season for resident game in Cyprus opens on Sunday, November 1, the Cyprus Hunting and Wildlife Conservation Federation said, urging the thousands of hunters heading into the countryside to act responsibly and strictly follow safety rules.
Hare, partridge and francolin may be hunted on Sundays and Wednesdays until Sunday, December 27, giving 17 hunting days in total.
The federation reminded hunters that they must keep to bag limits and to the restrictions set out in the Game and Fauna Service’s decrees. It stressed the safe use of firearms, respect for private property, crops and other people using the countryside, protection of the environment and fire prevention.
Hunters were also asked to record what they shoot on the ARTEMIS CY app, to help gather reliable data for the rational and sustainable management of game populations.
The federation urged hunters renewing their licence to choose a hunting club, which costs nothing extra. It said this directly supports the clubs’ work on game and game-conservation projects, habitat protection and improvement, and wildlife management.
Federation president Ilias Pekris said hunting was an integral part of the island’s tradition and culture, but that it was an activity that “requires responsibility, respect for nature and, above all, a commitment to safety”. He called on hunters to protect the environment and to support hunting clubs, which he said did important work for the future of the sport.
