Police in Limassol arrested a 30-year-old man shortly after midnight on Tuesday over the abduction of a 24-year-old who was allegedly seized from a park, beaten and injured with a knife.

According to the complaint made by the 24-year-old, a Turkish Cypriot, three men allegedly grabbed him from a park in the Agios Antonios area of Limassol, forced him into a vehicle and took him to an isolated rural area, where they allegedly beat him and injured him with a knife.

Limassol Assistant Police Director Lefteris Kyriakou said earlier that the alleged attackers suspected the 24-year-old of recent thefts of hunting dogs.

Officers from the Limassol Crime Prevention Unit (OPE) arrested the 30-year-old on a court warrant issued on the strength of evidence that emerged during police inquiries.

Limassol CID is investigating a case of abduction and causing grievous bodily harm. Investigators had taken statements and assessed evidence to secure testimony that would justify court warrants.

Police were told about the incident on Monday morning. Kyriakou said the 24-year-old had reportedly given a different account when he went to hospital, and the authorities are looking into the circumstances of his initial report.
