The 47-year-old man suspected of attempted murder at a construction site in Mouttagiaka, Limassol, has told investigators he acted in self-defence. He claims the 44-year-old victim attacked him first and started hitting him.
The suspect, who went to Limassol police headquarters voluntarily on Friday morning, made the claim orally and has not yet given a written statement. He is expected to do so in the presence of his lawyer. He is due to appear before Limassol District Court on Saturday, when police will ask for a remand order.
Personal differences and rivalries appear to lie behind the attack, which happened after a heated argument between the two men, who are colleagues. The 44-year-old was wounded in the abdomen and the hand. He had surgery at a private clinic in Limassol, where he is in a stable condition and out of danger. Investigators are also expected to take a statement from him.
The attack happened at around 8am on Thursday, when police were told that an injured person was at the building site. Officers collected evidence at the scene. Investigators have taken a statement from a colleague of the two men about how the incident happened, and the builder’s knife used in the attack was found nearby and taken as evidence.
The suspect left the scene on foot after the attack, and police issued a wanted notice for him for attempted murder. Limassol CID is continuing the investigation.
