Lionel Messi played his last match for Argentina on Tuesday, scoring once and setting up two more goals as his side beat Benin 3-0 in a friendly at River Plate’s Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires. The goal was his 126th for his country.
Messi was in tears before the match when he saw thousands of people surrounding the Argentina team bus on its way to the stadium.
The ground was packed, and a giant No 10 shirt bearing the word ‘Gracias’ was spread across the pitch.
Kick-off was delayed by half an hour amid the pre-match celebrations.
