National Guard to design and build small drones through new lab

Relevant News

The National Guard has gained the capability to design, develop and produce small unmanned aircraft (sUAV/FPV), through a newly established lab operating at the 12th Engineering Battalion, according to information obtained by Phileleftheros.

National Guard Chief Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou ordered the lab’s creation, marking the first time such a facility has been set up, with the lab established over the summer. The drones will be capable of surveillance and reconnaissance, and are expected to be configured for strike missions in future.

Theodorou visited the lab and was briefed on the process of designing, developing and producing the unmanned systems, as well as on the potential for their further development and operational use.

Particular emphasis is being placed on developing domestic know-how, as the lab allows the National Guard to develop small unmanned systems tailored to its operational needs.

According to the information, the new capability is part of the National Guard’s wider technological and operational transformation, aimed at strengthening its autonomy and ability to adapt quickly to the demands of the modern battlefield. As Phileleftheros previously reported, the National Guard plans to equip all units across all formations, at every level, with drones, a process expected to take place over the coming years.

The use of FPV systems and small UAVs has taken on growing importance in modern military operations, with armed forces internationally investing in the development of similar technologies. Phileleftheros understands that a number of personnel will also be trained to operate these systems.
