Rescue operation launched after swimmer in distress off Zygi, Larnaca

A search and rescue operation was launched off Zygi in the Larnaca district early on Saturday after a swimmer was reported in distress at sea.

According to authorities, at 05:30 on 28 June 2026, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) activated the national search and rescue plan “NEARCHOS” to respond to the incident.

A coordinated response was deployed involving fast patrol boats from the Port and Maritime Police and the Underwater Demolition Unit of the National Guard, as well as a helicopter from the Police Air Operations Unit and an ambulance service team.

The swimmer was recovered in good condition by a patrol boat from the Port and Maritime Police and transferred to an ambulance at Zygi fishing shelter.
