Larnaca Police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the highway incident in which a 65-year-old British man was dragged on a car bonnet for more than two kilometres, it emerged on Tuesday.
The arrest, made in the early hours of Tuesday, came after police detained a 29-year-old man on Monday afternoon. The 29-year-old is alleged to be the person who rented the vehicle involved in the incident. He claimed, however, that he was not driving at the time — and that the 24-year-old was behind the wheel.
It has not yet been established who was driving. Police said the question will be resolved through identification parades and witness statements. Both men are to appear before Larnaca District Court for remand orders.
What happened
The incident occurred last Wednesday on the Larnaca-Airport highway, between the Rizoelia and Kalo Chorio roundabouts. According to police, after a collision, the 65-year-old British driver approached the second vehicle to exchange details. Shortly afterwards, a patrol car arrived at the scene.
At the sight of the patrol car, the driver of the second vehicle sped off in an attempt to flee. The 65-year-old tried to stop him and ended up on the bonnet of the moving car, which then continued onto the highway. He eventually fell onto the road and suffered minor injuries. The driver fled the scene.
The reason the driver fled remains unknown. The incident came to public attention after a video was widely circulated.
