A fire that broke out on Thursday afternoon in an abandoned building in central Limassol, opposite the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK), has been brought under control by the Fire Service.

The Fire Service responded with four fire engines, including a telescopic aerial platform, after thick black smoke was seen rising from the building on Ifigeneias Street.

Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said earlier that the blaze was fully active, that part of the roof had collapsed, and that firefighters were making an effort to protect neighbouring properties and carry out the precautionary evacuation of residents in adjacent buildings. Off-duty personnel were also called in to assist.

Police said the fire appears to have been accidental. According to initial information, insulation work was being carried out on the roof using bitumen sheets, which caught fire.

No injuries were reported, while authorities continue to assess the damage and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
