The murder of former Karmiotissa president Stavros Demosthenous is making headlines around the world, with media outlets in many countries republishing the story.

Several outlets have featured the murder of the businessman in their coverage.

Demosthenous was shot dead this morning in Limassol when gunmen ambushed his car whilst he was driving with his son near his home in Sfalangiotissa. A van blocked his path before a person on a motorcycle pulled alongside his vehicle and opened fire.

His son attempted to drive him to hospital but crashed on the motorway. The son stopped a passing vehicle and asked the driver to take them to hospital, which he did. Demosthenous died from his injuries.

Police found a burnt van in Germasogeia which they believe the killers used to escape. All Limassol police divisions are involved in a coordinated operation to locate the perpetrators.

Police are treating the killing as a contract murder with the hallmarks of a gangland score-settling, according to sources.

Demosthenous served as president of Karmiotissa FC and was formerly president of Aris Limassol.
