Karmiotissa FC president Stavros Demosthenous was shot dead this morning in what police are treating as a contract killing in the Sfalangiotissa area of Limassol.
Police have launched a manhunt after gunmen ambushed the businessman and football club president whilst he was driving with his son near his home, according to philenews.
Demosthenous served as president of second division club Karmiotissa FC and was formerly president of Aris Limassol.
Police sources said a van blocked Demosthenous’s car before a person on a motorcycle pulled alongside his vehicle and opened fire on him.
His son immediately attempted to drive him to hospital. The car crashed on the motorway en route to the hospital, immobilising the vehicle, according to police sources.
The son then stopped a passing car and asked the driver to take them to hospital, which he did. Demosthenous died from his injuries.
Major crime units from Limassol CID and the Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Department rushed to the scene and began collecting evidence. All Limassol police divisions are involved in a coordinated operation to locate the perpetrators.
Police found a burnt van in the Germasogeia area which they believe the killers used to escape. The scene has been cordoned off and is being examined thoroughly.
Investigators have begun searching for CCTV footage in the Sfalangiotissa area and surrounding districts to map the perpetrators’ route before and after the killing.
Police say all evidence points towards a contract killing with the hallmarks of a gangland score-settling.
