Cyprus has launched a €170 million expansion of its airports, with the one in Larnaca extending across multiple levels and Paphos adding a single-level extension.
Construction began in late March following the completion of financing agreements between Hermes Airports, the airports’ management company, and a consortium of Bouygues Batiment International SAS and Iacovou Brothers (Constructions) Ltd. The government and Hermes Airports signed the expansion agreement in December last year, extending the concession agreement by 18 months to 11 November 2032.
The expansion works will take 30 months at Larnaca and 27 months at Paphos, with Hermes Airports financing the entire €170 million cost, according to documents submitted to parliament.
Larnaca terminal to reach 12.4 million passenger capacity
Larnaca airport’s Phase B works cover approximately 20,000 square metres across various levels. The project includes a new wing with departure and arrival gates connected to the main building, additional baggage carousels, expanded passport control and security areas, extended commercial zones and increased aircraft parking positions.
The basement level will house new electromechanical installations and upgraded cargo handling areas. Level 1 will feature expanded baggage claim areas with one additional carousel. Level 2 will accommodate enlarged passport control and security screening areas, plus new office spaces.
A new single-storey satellite building will be constructed near the western aircraft parking area, providing four new waiting lounges and pedestrian boarding facilities. The structure allows for future vertical expansion and connection to terminals planned for subsequent development phases. The project also includes construction of new aircraft parking stands.
Paphos airport adds 30% more space in single-level expansion
Paphos airport’s single-level terminal extension will increase the facility’s capacity by approximately 30 per cent, whilst the southern parallel taxiway extension will enhance operational flexibility.
The expansion includes new electromechanical installation areas, upgraded cargo handling facilities, extended baggage claim areas with one additional carousel, enlarged passport control and security zones, new office spaces, expanded commercial areas and a new taxiway.
Upon completion, Larnaca airport’s annual passenger capacity will reach 12.4 million, whilst Paphos will handle 5 million passengers yearly.
The original 25-year concession agreement took effect on 12 May 2006. Following last year’s extension agreement, Hermes Airports will continue managing both airports until November 2032. The company, a partnership of international and Cypriot firms, holds responsibility for financing, design, construction, maintenance, operation, management and development of the island’s international airports.
