In 2010, the first 7 Lidl stores opened their doors in Cyprus. What were the key steps the company followed to establish itself in such a competitive market?

Lidl’s establishment in the Cypriot market since 2010 was based on a series of strategic steps that combined business agility, local adaptation, and a strong commitment to sustainability. From the very beginning, we knew that success would not come solely from competitive pricing, but also from quality, innovation, and a deep understanding of the needs of the Cypriot consumer.

Before opening our first stores, we invested time and resources to tailor our business model to the local context. We didn’t try to copy others—we brought the Lidl experience while respecting the Cypriot reality. This approach, along with open and sincere interaction and continuous improvement, helped us earn the public’s trust.

Our initial steps included the creation of a modern supply chain, the selection of strategic locations, and the training of a strong team who believed in our vision. We then invested in high-standard infrastructure, such as our logistics center, and leveraged technology to enhance the shopping experience—from self-checkouts to value chain optimization.

At the same time, we adapted our product range to local preferences, creating the “Nóma” line of authentic Cypriot products. For us, highlighting local flavors is a way to honor the country’s tradition and identity.

Finally, from day one, we committed to being an active member of society. Through corporate social responsibility initiatives and partnerships with organisations such as the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society and the Cyprus Red Cross, we have supported vulnerable groups and given back the trust that society places in us every day.

With investments exceeding €230 million, Lidl Cyprus is now an integral part of the local economy and society—and we continue with the same commitment to quality, innovation, and progress.

What would you consider the most important milestones in Lidl Cyprus’ 15-year journey, and why? Were there defining moments that played a key role in the company’s progress?

Over our 15 years of presence in Cyprus, there have been several milestones that have shaped the path and identity of Lidl Cyprus. Each represented a step forward in our progress, innovation, and connection with society. The opening of the first 7 stores in 2010 laid the foundation for our presence. It was a bold move that the mature and competitive market embraced from the very beginning.

One of the most significant steps in our journey was the establishment of our distribution centre in Larnaca, which provided us with operational independence and allowed us to function with flexibility and reliability. Equally decisive was the launch of the “Nóma” range of local products, through which we showcased Cypriot gastronomy and tangibly supported local producers. For us, highlighting the authenticity and tradition of the country is an integral part of our identity.

A particularly special milestone was the creation of the Lidl Food Academy—the first of its kind in Cyprus. Through this initiative, we focused on educating both children and adults on conscious and sustainable eating, further strengthening Lidl’s connection with the community and everyday life.

As part of our digital strategy, we launched Lidl Plus, an innovative loyalty programme that rewards its users weekly with attractive discounts on popular products, along with exclusive benefits such as participation in competitions and promotional offers. Users of the app can save up to €1,700 per year, further enhancing the value we provide in their daily lives.

At the same time, the adoption of innovative technologies, such as self-checkouts and digital tools, significantly improved the customer experience and boosted the efficiency of our stores. Our strategic investment in sustainability and social responsibility—with initiatives such as food waste reduction, support for vulnerable groups, and partnerships with organisations like the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society and the Cyprus Red Cross—remains a constant priority for us, not just an occasional undertaking.

Our journey has also been recognised through important distinctions. Lidl Cyprus has been awarded the “Top Employer” certification for the 8th consecutive year—affirming our commitment to the growth and well-being of our people. In addition, being named the “No.1 company in Cyprus for best value for money” at the Best Buy Awards, along with the multiple awards received for our initiatives and actions, confirms that we are moving in the right direction—with consistency and responsibility.

Marking 15 years of presence in Cyprus is more than just an anniversary. It is an opportunity to acknowledge the progress made, to honour the relationships we’ve built, and to renew our commitment for the future. With investments exceeding €230 million, Lidl Cyprus is today an integral part of the local economy and society—and we continue with the same dedication, guided by quality, innovation, and respect for people.

How has Lidl Cyprus’ store network and workforce evolved since 2010? Are there plans for further expansion?

Since beginning operations in Cyprus in 2010, we have experienced continuous growth alongside challenges and achievements. Through dedication and hard work, we have built a solid network of 21 stores and formed a dynamic team of around 700 colleagues. Each and every one of us is an essential part of this journey.

Over these 15 years, we have invested more than €230 million in the Cypriot market, aiming not only at business development but also at supporting the local community and economy. We are proud to contribute actively to the progress of the country that hosts us.

Looking ahead, we move forward with the same passion and commitment. For 2025, we have planned investments exceeding €15 million, and by 2027, our total investment plan is expected to reach €40 million. Our goal is to expand our store network, upgrade our infrastructure, and further strengthen sustainability and innovation in every aspect of our operations.

We believe in the power of teamwork, the importance of responsibility, and the need for continuous improvement. Together, we continue building the future of Lidl Cyprus—with respect for our people, our customers, and the environment.

Lidl has managed to build a strong relationship of trust with the Cypriot consumer. What are the key elements that contributed to this bond?

Trust is not built overnight. It is earned through consistency, transparency, and respect. From day one, our goal was to offer the Cypriot consumer a shopping experience that exceeds expectations: high-quality products, clear pricing, optimal value for money, quick and easy shopping, and friendly service.

At the heart of this relationship is quality. We apply strict controls on our products, ensure compliance with international standards and certifications, and work closely with Cypriot producers, supporting local production and the economy.

Equally important is the role of sustainable choices. Consumers today prefer companies that respect the planet, animals, and people. Lidl Cyprus is on this path with consistency—whether through quality certifications, waste reduction initiatives, or the promotion of responsible products.

Innovation has also been a key pillar. We redefined the concept of rewards through our digital loyalty programme, Lidl Plus, offering real value to our customers. It’s not just an app—it’s a modern way of giving back the trust our customers place in us.

Lastly, the human approach is what truly makes the difference. We stand by the consumer not only as a business but also as an active member of society. Through corporate social responsibility actions, partnerships with organisations, and support for vulnerable groups, we demonstrate in practice that trust is built daily—not just with words, but with actions.
