Forest fire risk at “red alert” level in Cyprus amid high temperatures

Relevant News

The risk of forest fires starting and spreading across Cyprus has reached a “red alert” level, driven by the high temperatures affecting the island.

The Forestry Department reminded the public that causing a fire carries severe penalties. An appeal was issued to the public to exercise extreme caution during outings, completely avoiding any actions or activities that could potentially spark a fire.

Anyone who spots smoke or fire is urged to immediately call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Service).

Civil Defence issues public health recommendations

Meanwhile, the Civil Defence Force has issued recommendations to the public following a yellow warning from the Meteorological Department. This warning, effective from 12:00 to 17:00 today, Monday, 21 July 2025, indicates exceptionally high temperatures, expected to reach around 40 degrees Celsius inland and about 32 degrees Celsius in the higher mountainous areas. These recommendations aim to prevent risks and minimise negative consequences from the heatwave.

The public is advised to avoid unnecessary travel and strenuous physical work under the sun, as well as sunbathing, prolonged walking or running in the sun, and crowded areas.

It is recommended to wear cool, comfortable, and light-coloured clothing, protect the head with a hat, and wear good quality sunglasses that guard against sun glare. The Civil Defence also suggests eating small, light meals rich in fruits and vegetables and low in fat, drinking plenty of water and fruit/vegetable juices, avoiding alcoholic beverages, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and using artificial ventilation (fans) or air conditioning systems.

The public is also urged to contact their doctor for any potential health issues and to look after elderly or vulnerable relatives and close acquaintances.
