And now it’s time for the prosecutions

Relevant News

The findings regarding the much-discussed Takata defective airbag scandal have been published, allowing the public to study them thoroughly and draw their own conclusions.

The Investigative Committee’s report, established by the Law Office to examine the matter, is clear-cut, and the ball now lies in the police’s court to investigate potential criminal offences.

The report clearly documents serious omissions, institutional weaknesses, and possible criminal liabilities linked to two deaths and one serious injury in Cyprus. Someone must be held accountable for these failures.

As previously reported, the findings identify potential criminal liability for four individuals, whilst disciplinary responsibilities affecting officials in the Road Transport Department, the Electromechanical Services Department, and the police will be investigated further.

Senior state officials who failed to “act responsibly” also fall within the scope of accountability.

Society demands accountability and justice. It requires justice, and this can only be achieved through prosecuting those responsible. Clearly, someone must be held to account. The Investigative Committee’s findings directly link these omissions to three serious cases: two deaths and one serious injury.

We believe prosecutions for those found responsible represent the only way forward. The next step would remain in limbo if this case were allowed to fade away quietly. We do not believe this will happen, given the evidence in the report that cannot be ignored.

Based on the Investigative Committee’s report, police investigations will commence, and we await the outcome. Much will be determined by these results. We do not believe kangaroo courts should be established, nor should individuals be tried and convicted by social media.

However, we maintain that in a functioning state with effective institutions, oversight exists and justice prevails.

Anyone in a position of responsibility who handles state affairs must be subject to scrutiny and accountability. This means errors and omissions are judged and responsibilities are assigned accordingly.

We therefore await the next steps and hope the relevant authorities will not disappoint us this time.
