Police arrested a 36-year-old man in the free Famagusta area after officers discovered him allegedly butchering a kangaroo in an apartment building car park.
Officers from Deryneia Police Station responded immediately to information received Wednesday afternoon about two individuals reportedly cutting up an animal with knives in a residential parking area.
Upon police arrival, one suspect fled the scene while the 36-year-old man remained at the location.
During an on-site search, officers discovered plastic bags containing a dismembered animal alongside a hatchet and five knives.
When questioned, the suspect claimed the animal was a kangaroo that he had received from another person in the Paralimni area.
A veterinary services official later confirmed the remains were those of an adult kangaroo.
The animal remains were collected by relevant authorities for further examination.
Police subsequently transported the 36-year-old to Deryneia Police Station, where investigations revealed he was residing illegally in the Republic of Cyprus after his asylum application had been rejected in 2022.
A judicial arrest warrant was issued and the man was detained to assist with investigations.
Deryneia Police Station continues its investigation into the case.
