Families of victims killed in road accidents linked to defective Takata airbags will testify tomorrow in a session of the official investigation into EU vehicle imports to Cyprus.
The investigative commission examining the distribution of vehicles from the EU, imports from third countries and vehicle recalls, will hear testimonies from relatives of victims on Wednesday, 30 April, beginning at 10:00 am.
Yiannos Georgallis, father of 19-year-old Styliani who was killed in a road accident in 2024, will provide testimony alongside Yiannos Oxinos and Maria Loui, parents of 24-year-old Kyriakos who lost his life in an accident in 2023.
Alexandros Loungos, who was injured in a 2017 accident and is currently receiving treatment in Barcelona, has also requested to testify. If a video conference testimony proves impossible, his lawyer will present his statement instead.
According to Michalis Vorkas, president of the Bar Association and member of the Investigative Commission, traffic police officers will present information related to road accidents attributed to defective components, including Takata airbags.
The Commission, chaired by Michalakis Christodoulou, has issued an open invitation for victims’ relatives and injured parties to come forward voluntarily to provide testimony without formal summons.
Sources indicate that others who experienced unexpected airbag deployments have also requested to testify, though it remains unclear whether they will ultimately appear before the commission.
The Commission has scheduled regular sessions with the aim of completing public hearings by the end of May. For the next stage of proceedings on 5 and 6 May, current and former executives of the Department of Road Transport have been summoned to testify, including current director George Louka, acting director Eleni Pipi-Hadjikosta, and former directors Sotiris Kolettas, Yiannis Nicolaides, and Petros Xenophontos.
