Kalavasos bridge on Nicosia-Limassol motorway to be reopened

The Kalavasos bridge on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway will reopen to traffic on Saturday, January 25, Andreas Diakos, Executive Engineer of the Department of Public Works told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

The €4.5 million upgrade project, which began in October 2023, aims to bring the 1980s American-designed bridge in line with current European standards, Diakos said.

The restoration work includes repairs to oxidised reinforcements and deteriorated concrete. The project is scheduled for completion in July 2024 after 80 weeks of construction.

The contractor faces penalties for delays beyond the scheduled completion date and for extending road closures beyond the allocated 15-week period per direction, Diakos said.

A recent concrete workers’ strike caused a 31-day delay to the project, though this delay was deemed justified and will not incur penalties.

Traffic congestion has been observed during peak hours, between 7-9 am towards Limassol and 3:30-5 pm towards Nicosia, but flow remains normal during other times.

The Nicosia-bound lane will close for 15 weeks starting January 30, with reopening expected around May 15.
