Kalavasos bridge on Cyprus’s busiest motorway is undergoing urgent repairs after inspections revealed severe structural deterioration, causing significant disruption to thousands of daily commuters between Nicosia and Limassol.
The Kalavasos bridge, built in the 1980s to American specifications, showed serious corrosion of reinforcement bars and concrete degradation, prompting a 5.5 million euro renovation project to meet current European seismic standards.
Work began in October 2024 on the southbound section and is now expected to finish in late January following a month-long concrete industry strike. The second phase, covering the northbound lanes, will start in February and continue until May, with traffic redirected to create temporary two-way flows.
The Department of Public Works has imposed steep penalties of 7,000 euros per day for delays, compared to the standard 1,000 euros, to expedite the project which includes comprehensive structural reinforcement, new safety barriers, and drainage systems.
Officials say the upgrade, being carried out by MEDON-WADE ADAMS J.V, will ensure long-term durability and marks the final phase of bridge improvements along this key transport route, with completion scheduled for July 2025.
