Cyprus has established a Defence Industry Council (DIC) as part of its governance programme to support the domestic defence industry, with Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas appointed as chairman.
The cabinet, chaired by President Nikos Christodoulides, approved the council’s formation and appointed eight members, including representatives from academia, business chambers, and the defence sector.
The council’s key members include Dr Panayiotis Hadjipavlis, Director of General Procurement and Defence Capabilities at the Ministry of Defence, Stavros Stavrou, President of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Rear Admiral (Ret.) Konstantinos Fytiris.
The DIC will serve in an advisory capacity, supporting government policy in the defence industry sector.
Its objectives include developing defence research and technology, aligning the defence industry with national security goals, and advancing national defence systems for the National Guard.
The council will also focus on fostering partnerships between universities, research centres, and innovative businesses, while promoting investments in domestic defence production.
Members will serve five-year terms on a voluntary, non-remunerated basis.
The initiative aims to establish a robust domestic defence industry capable of meeting Cyprus’s national defence and technological requirements.
