Leading members of the US Congress’s Hellenic Caucus have introduced legislation aimed at permanently lifting the arms embargo on Cyprus, which currently requires annual renewal.
The bill seeks to eliminate restrictions on military assistance and defence equipment sales to the Republic of Cyprus, addressing limitations that affect long-term defence procurement planning.
While the United States has fully lifted the embargo, the current requirement for yearly renewal complicates Cyprus’s long-term military procurement strategy.
The legislative initiative is expected to pave the way for Cyprus to acquire US weapons systems, further strengthening defence ties between Washington and Nicosia.
