Cabinet approves bills for breastfeeding in public spaces

The Council of Ministers approved two Health Ministry bills on Wednesday aimed at facilitating breastfeeding in public spaces and workplaces.

Health Minister Michalis Damianos said the legislation is part of Cyprus’s new national strategy to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. The bills mandate the creation of dedicated breastfeeding rooms in workplaces and public spaces, establishing minimum requirements for such facilities.

“These bills represent a crucial step in strengthening support for breastfeeding mothers and securing their rights in both workplace and public settings”, Damianos said after the cabinet meeting.

The legislation will require breastfeeding facilities in workplaces to allow nursing employees to breastfeed or express milk, protecting children’s rights to breastfeeding even after their mothers return to work.

The minister explained that the bills also mandate breastfeeding and milk expression rooms in public spaces including hospitals, airports, shopping centres and other public services, ensuring nursing mothers have easy access to suitable facilities.

“With these bills, we are moving towards a family and child-friendly society, in line with recommendations from international organisations like the World Health Organization and UNICEF”, Damianos said.

The legislation will now go to parliament for discussion. The minister expressed hope for swift approval, describing the bills as another step towards creating a society that respects and supports the rights of mothers and their children.
