Ministry of health to take measures against raging seasonal viruses

The Ministry of Health is implementing new measures to address rising respiratory infections and flu cases, following warnings from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organisation about increased viral activity in coming weeks.

Director General Christina Giannaki told philenews the ministry is requesting the Health Insurance Organisation to increase the number of doctors at GHS walk-in clinics during weekends and holidays.

This aims to reduce pressure on emergency departments by providing alternative care options when personal doctors are unavailable.

The ministry announced three key initiatives:

  • A request to increase staffing at GHS walk-in clinics
  • New health guidance for schools, hospitals and healthcare professionals
  • Procurement of additional antiviral medications

Giannaki emphasised the importance of timely antiviral prescription to prevent symptom escalation and potential hospitalisations.

She expressed concern about low flu and COVID-19 vaccination rates in nursing homes, citing resistance among elderly residents.

The ministry maintains ongoing coordination with the private sector following a December 20 agreement to transfer patients from public hospitals to reduce overcrowding.

These measures come as part of the ministry’s response to current epidemiological conditions and anticipated increases in respiratory infections.
