What to do to protect ourselves from respiratory viruses

The Ministry of Health issued public health guidance Monday to reduce the risk of respiratory virus infections.

In its announcement, the ministry reminded the public to maintain personal protective measures, including regular and thorough hand washing with soap and water or alcohol-based sanitiser. People are advised to avoid touching their face, particularly eyes, nose, and mouth – the main entry points for viruses – especially with unwashed hands.

The ministry emphasised that individuals should limit contact with those showing symptoms of illness, particularly if they belong to vulnerable groups. Anyone experiencing respiratory infection symptoms, such as severe coughing, fever, or nasal discharge, should self-isolate at home until at least 24 hours after symptoms subside.

Additional recommendations include covering the mouth and nose with a tissue or the inner elbow when coughing or sneezing, wearing masks in crowded conditions, and consulting personal doctors or Emergency Personal Doctor Services if symptoms develop.
