Winter virus surge no cause for panic, doctors say

Relevant News

Health experts say there is no cause for panic over recent respiratory infection rates in Cyprus, despite growing public concern about metapneumovirus and increased hospital admissions.

Respiratory infections naturally peak during winter months, primarily affecting vulnerable groups including immunocompromised patients, those with chronic conditions, young children and the elderly, medical specialists explain.

These infections range from common colds and flu to bronchitis, pneumonia and viral infections including COVID-19, whooping cough, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

While metapneumovirus has recently caused concern, experts note it has been present for years, accounting for up to 14% of fever cases in monitored healthcare settings last year.

Prevention measures include:

  • Regular hand washing
  • Avoiding crowded spaces
  • Covering coughs
  • Getting recommended vaccinations

Healthcare providers stress that while most respiratory infections are mild and require only rest, fluids and fever medication, certain symptoms warrant immediate medical attention:

  • Severe coughing
  • High fever
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Breathing difficulties

Doctors emphasise that antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections and should only be prescribed when necessary.

Cyprus currently faces challenges with antibiotic resistance, consuming three times more antibiotics than other European countries, with resistance rates reaching 80% even for advanced antibiotics.

Vaccination remains crucial for high-risk groups, including the elderly, those with chronic conditions, and young children, particularly against flu, pneumococcal pneumonia, and RSV.
