Syrian nationals living in Cyprus have begun withdrawing their asylum applications and subsidiary protection status, Cyprus’s Deputy Minister for Migration Nicholas Ioannides said at the EU Interior Affairs Council in Brussels.
“In light of recent developments in Syria, it is essential to respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Ioannides said, adding that Cyprus is closely monitoring the situation in Syria.
The Council meeting’s agenda included updates from the European Commission on implementing the new legislative framework for migration and defence, set to take effect in June 2026. Ministers were also scheduled to discuss the external dimension of migration during a working lunch.
Ioannides noted that while several countries have recently suspended the processing of Syrian asylum applications, Cyprus had implemented this measure in April 2024. He added that Cyprus has taken steps to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of Syrian nationals.
“We remain committed to continuing discussions with our EU partners and the Commission to find new solutions for addressing the migration issue,” Ioannides said. He emphasised Cyprus’s readiness to discuss “more effective and humane management systems” for migration, in accordance with international and European law, while considering the capabilities of frontline member states.
The minister stressed the importance of achieving security and stability in Syria for the benefit of both the Syrian people and the wider region.
