The collaboration between Cyta, the project contractor, and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is proceeding smoothly for the implementation of 400,000 smart meters across the electricity network.
According to philenews sources, the first batch of 30,000 smart meters is expected to arrive in December, with installation scheduled to begin in January 2025.
The smart meters are manufactured by Swiss company Landis+Gyr.
The total project cost amounts to €50 million, with €35 million funded through the Recovery and Resilience Facility, whilst EAC will cover the €10 million installation costs from its cash reserves.
Cyta, following a competitive tender, is responsible for designing and supplying the integrated smart meter system and its integration with EAC’s existing Meter Data Management System (MDMS).
EAC personnel will handle the installation of necessary equipment, including smart meters and data concentrators.
Under the project timeline, EAC must procure all 400,000 meters and install 250,000 units by July 2026.
The first phase, involving the installation of all 400,000 smart meters, is expected to complete by mid-2027.
A second phase will then commence to install an additional 200,000 smart meters, ultimately covering all consumers in Cyprus.
EAC officials note that approximately 50 utility crews will work exclusively on replacing existing meters with smart meters over a period of at least three years.
