Strong winds leave many without power as EAC battles fallen trees

Relevant News

EAC maintenance crews have been battling strong winds since yesterday, with the situation described as extremely challenging by the Electricity Authority’s spokesperson, Christina Papadopoulou, speaking to philenews.

“Entire trees were uprooted and fell onto power lines”, she said, adding that workers in elevated platforms are struggling to make repairs. According to Papadopoulou, residents continue to face disruption, with at least nine areas currently without power and no clear timeline for restoration.

“Our work is very difficult. Crews from other cities have come to assist in Nicosia”, Papadopoulou emphasised, noting that “the damage has been extensive”.

The current situation involves multiple blown EAC fuses resulting from short circuits caused by falling trees. “Power outages are occurring in certain areas. Currently, there are problems in 9-10 locations. These are low-voltage faults, affecting perhaps 3-4 houses on a street or several flats in an apartment building”, she explained.

However, Papadopoulou stressed that they cannot predict when power will be fully restored.

“Our crews faced extremely adverse conditions. Our workers were operating from elevated platforms whilst dealing with gale-force winds. Throughout the night, they had to remove large, completely uprooted trees that had fallen onto power lines”, she said.
