Ready-mix concrete makers to consider ending lockout as union strike continues

Cyprus ready-mix concrete manufacturers will consider a proposal to fully lift their lockout at a general meeting today, as industrial action by trade unions enters its sixth day.

Kostas Kythreotis, chairman of the Ready-mix Concrete Manufacturers Association, told the Cyprus News Agency that the board would propose ending the lockout at the 4pm meeting.

“We will invite members who wish to do so to proceed with serving the construction industry,” he said.

“This would be a complete lifting of the lockout, not a partial one,” Kythreotis added.

Around 50 per cent of the association’s members are eager to resume operations, as their employees are not unionised and want to return to work.

Sources say the association has been in talks with Labour Ministry officials over the past three days and believes the gap between employers and trade unions can be narrowed.
