Paphos needs more schools, MP says

Members of the House Education Committee visited two schools in Paphos, and AKEL MP Valentinos Facontis reported that the visit revealed significant infrastructure and staffing challenges.

Members of the committee toured Emba Primary School and Yeroskipou’s Agia Paraskevi Gymnasium, gaining insight into the specific issues facing these institutions and the broader concerns within the Cypriot education system.

At Emba Primary School, there was a “serious lack of infrastructure” noted, including insufficient classrooms, laboratories, and indoor sports facilities. Similar problems were observed at Agia Paraskevi Gymnasium, which also faces understaffing issues, which are common throughout the Paphos district.

The visit underscored the “pressing need for new school units” in both primary and secondary education sectors across Paphos, according to Facontis. He emphasised that existing schools cannot accommodate the significant increase in the student population in recent years.

The AKEL representative warned that concentrating large numbers of students in schools lacking necessary infrastructure “creates serious difficulties in the educational process itself”.

He called on the government to prioritise these needs and take immediate action to address the situation.
