The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has voiced strong concerns over plans to fell pine trees within the grounds of Psimolofou Primary School.

According to a statement from the Green Party, the trees are slated for removal to accommodate an expansion of the school’s facilities.

Loizos Demetriou, the Nicosia District Secretary of the Movement, recently visited the site and has sent formal letters to Education Minister Athena Michaelidou, Department of Forests Director Dr Savvas Iezekiel, and the Psimolofou School Board.

In his correspondence, Demetriou emphasised that the Department of Forests has not granted any permission for the tree removal, based on information received by the Movement.

The Ecologists are urging authorities to explore alternatives to the current expansion plans that would preserve the pine trees.

The Green Party maintains that a solution must be found to allow for the school’s development without sacrificing the trees, which they consider crucial to the area’s natural environment and quality of life.
