The Consumers’ Association has raised concerns over unexplained disparities in fuel import prices in Cyprus compared to the European Union average.
The group’s analysis reveals that Cyprus consistently faces higher average import prices before taxes across most fuel types.
The association noted a peculiar trend in price differentials. When EU member states experience rising fuel prices before taxes, the gap between Cyprus and the EU average narrows. Conversely, when EU prices trend downward, the price difference between Cyprus and the EU average widens.
“In almost all cases, the average price without taxes in Cyprus is shown to be higher than the average price of the European Union,” the consumer group stated in its announcement.
The association highlighted that these pricing anomalies have persisted throughout 2024, calling for “convincing answers” to explain the situation. They also questioned whether the competent authority responsible for monitoring fuel prices in Cyprus could provide explanations for these discrepancies.
