Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has claimed that the Republic of Cyprus has become a military supply base for the United States and the United Kingdom.
In an interview with Turkish channel aHaber, Tatar expressed alarm over what he perceives as increased military activity in the Republic-controlled part of the island.
“In 1960, when Britain withdrew from the island, it negotiated very well, took two sovereign bases, and left, and it has been using these bases as it wishes for its own ambitions for years,” Tatar said. He added, “The ‘TRNC’ is careful, taking all kinds of measures. We will not abandon our sovereignty. We will not play the games of the Greek Cypriots.”
Tatar highlighted the island’s unique situation, noting the presence of three guarantor countries: Turkey, the UK, and Greece. He emphasised the importance of relations between Turkey and the occupied north, which is recognised only by Ankara.
“We must take our own measures against all of these with our motherland Turkey,” Tatar stated.
The Turkish Cypriot leader expressed concern that the Republic of Cyprus “has become a target” due to its alleged role as a supply base. He claimed that criticism of this development exists within Greek Cypriot society.
Tatar reiterated his support for a two-state solution to the Cyprus issue, arguing that recent events have reinforced the correctness of this stance. “All these events once again reinforced how accurate and correct this national policy is,” he said.
