Blood reserves low due to holidays, Blood Centre calls for donations

Relevant News

The Head of the Blood Centre, Androulla Panayiotou, has warned that maintaining adequate blood supply could be challenging this week, as many regular donors are currently on holiday in Cyprus and abroad.

“While we do not face an immediate crisis, the coming week may prove difficult, and we will need blood donations. Our reserves will be low in the next few days as no organised blood drives are scheduled,” she noted.

She appealed to the public, encouraging those who could, to come forward and donate blood. Emphasising the daily target of collecting around 300 units, she highlighted that achieving this goal would be particularly challenging during this holiday week.

Regarding individuals returning from overseas travel, Panayiotou clarified that they are eligible to donate blood as long as their travel history does not include countries excluded for specific reasons.

“While both the Blood Centre and hospital blood banks maintain reserves, a continued low turnout of donors over the next two days will result in a problematic situation,” Panayiotou added.
