The Department of Environment has announced a nation-wide cleanup campaign targeting areas plagued by illegal waste dumping. The initiative, in collaboration with municipalities and communities, will prioritise high-fire-risk zones such as forest borders and remote areas.
A total of 12 municipalities and 92 communities have already requested participation, detailing specific dumping sites. The department has prioritised these sites based on fire risk and environmental sensitivity, with a focus on Natura 2000 areas, forests, and state-owned land.
To address the overwhelming number of requests, the government will initially fund cleanup efforts in Natura 2000 areas, forests, and state-owned land, along with private parcels within or adjacent to these protected zones.
A budget of €700,000 has been allocated for the first phase, cleaning 156 sites. Any remaining funds will be used for subsequent cleanup phases.
Local authorities receiving grants must commit to preventing future dumping and appoint waste inspectors. The Department of Environment will provide necessary training and support.
