Tankers dispatched to cover Lageia water outage

Residents of Lageia, a small community in the Larnaca mountains, have endured eight days without water due to an outage.

Prompted by a Phileleftheros report, the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (LDLGO) has apologised for the disruption and dispatched water tankers to provide relief.

“We apologise to the residents for the ordeal they have endured due to the interruption in the water supply,” the LDLGO said in a statement.

The statement explains that LDLGO assumed management of Lageia’s water supply network, along with 15 others, on July 1, 2024, after the local government reform. They inherited a system rife with “technical problems, which had been neglected for a long time.” Issues include non-functioning valves, numerous underground leaks, and reservoirs at the same altitude as the water supply.

The LDLGO, in collaboration with the Water Development Department, is working to restore regular service.

“We are making every possible effort to restore the water supply with the taking of even non-standard measures, such as the transfer of water by tanker trucks to homes that have been without water for many days,” the statement said.

Despite these efforts, the organisation cautioned that lasting solutions depend on adequate water supply to the reservoirs. “However, it should be clarified that the LDLGO cannot serve consumers if there is no satisfactory water supply to the reservoirs.”
