Student hospitalised after stoning incident in Paphos school

A student at a technical school in Paphos became a victim of stoning, resulting in her hospitalisation, according to a complaint made by MP Chrysanthos Savvides to the Education Committee of the Parliament.

MP Christos Christofides added that school bullying has now taken the form of gangs.

During the discussion on school bullying, it was emphasized that 25% of students in Cyprus are victims of violence, and 2% are children with significantly deviant behaviour.

These figures arise from a research study conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Education by Dr. Kostas Fanti, a professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Cyprus.

These findings align with the conclusions of the international assessment PISA 2022 regarding this phenomenon in our country.

According to the Police, there is an increase in cases involving minors (not only in the school environment).

Specifically, in 2020, there were 451 cases, in 2021 there were 496, and in 2022, there were 508.

Through the Student Federation (PSEM), students emphasised that one in four students is a victim of bullying, and many more witness such incidents.

They also noted that student bullying occurs both inside and outside school units.
