When last spring the young musician Marios Theodorou approached Christodoulos Protopapas of Hellas Sat to send… a song with a collective message into space, it seemed an impossible dream. Maybe even a little crazy. When he and his team prepared it, he went out on the streets to ask people if they thought he was preparing to send his song into space, very few believed him.
And yet! With the huge support of Hellas Sat, the grand plan of the partnership of three young Cypriots, Marios Theodorou, the Turkish Cypriot musician Tugce Beserler, and the 17-year-old lyricist Achilleas Theodorou, resulted in the song “Freedom from Today” along with the accompanying video clip, and will be on HELLAS SAT 5, which will be launched next time by the company of the same name.
The message of the song
The song “Freedom from Today” comes at a time when our neighborhood is burning in the wake of another war that leaves behind bloody wounds on humanity. Through the language of music, the group of the song’s contributors, coming from an island that experienced war and its suffering, aspire to speak the universal language of peace and freedom to the souls of millions of people around the world, in the hope that one day the day will come when war will be a distant past.

For the preparation of the song, the musicians Marios Theodorou and Tugce Beserler collaborated in the performance, while Achilleas Theodorou wrote the lyrics. With the collaboration of a multitude of musicians, the song was recorded simultaneously at the time of writing the lyrics, and the music of the song.

Video clip… symbolically in a mental hospital
The video clip, directed and produced by Marios Theodorou, was shot in Nicosia, symbolically in a place reminiscent of the Athalassa hospital that was bombed during the first day of the Turkish invasion, resulting in the murder of 33 people, including Turkish Cypriots. It took four decades to begin the exhumation and the process of identifying their remains in order to deliver them to their families for burial. Bearing the stigma of being mentally ill, some were never delivered into familiar hands.

The video clip of the song “Freedom from Today” was presented on Monday at a press conference in Nicosia, while at the same time, it was uploaded on the YouTube platform.
