Political controversy over Famagusta anti-occupation event continues

The strong political controversy that followed the displaced Famagusta mayor’s invitation to his Turkish Cypriot ‘counterpart’ to attend Saturday’s anti-occupation event for the coastal city continues, Philenews reports.

The event, marking the dark anniversary of Famagusta’s bloody capture by the Turkish army back in August 1974, is to be attended by President Nikos Christodoulides himself.

Hardline political parties object to the presence of a representative of the Turkish Cypriot regime in the breakaway northern part of Cyprus to an event condemning the continued occupation of the once vibrant city.

At the same time, it is surprising that there was no reaction from the Turkish Cypriot regime as regards the presence of Suleyman Ulucay at the anti-occupation event.

Afterall, the main purpose of the event is for the message that the once vibrant city should be returned to its legal Greek Cypriot inhabitants is sent out.

The event will be also attended by a Turkish Cypriot choir, along with children from the Turkish Cypriot community who are to take part in the artistic performance.

The Presidency or the Foreign Ministry in Nicosia keep silent over this while Famagusta mayor Simos Ioannou has clarified they are all aware of the Municipal Council’s decision.
