The Cyprus Film Club, Open Arts and a string of galleries across the island have a packed week of culture on offer, with highlights ranging from award-winning cinema to postcolonial art debates.

Film

The Cyprus Film Club screens Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy at the Pantheon Cinema in Nicosia. The Japanese film, which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, comprises three standalone stories exploring coincidence, human relationships and hidden desires. A sake-tasting hosted by the Japanese Embassy will precede the screening. Dialogue in Japanese with Greek subtitles. (2021, 121 min)

Spanish actress Carmen Maura — known as a muse of Pedro Almodóvar — stars in Calle Málaga, the latest film by Maryam Touzani, also screening at Pantheon. Showtimes: 10, 12 and 13 May at 8.30pm; matinée screenings on 9 and 10 May at 6pm.

New releases now showing at RIO (Nicosia Mall and Limassol, tel. 25871410) include Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour, a documentary directed by James Cameron and Billie Eilish; animated family film The Sheep Detectives, directed by Kyle Balda and starring Hugh Jackman, Brett Goldstein and Patrick Stewart; horror film Hokum, directed by Damian McCarthy and starring Adam Scott; Mortal Kombat II, directed by Simon McQuoid and starring Karl Urban; and anime feature That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime – The Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea, directed by Yasuhito Kikuchi.

Theatre

Open Arts presents Caryl Churchill’s Glass. Kill. Bluebeard. Imp., directed by Athena Kasiou, at 11 Plutarchou Street in the Old Town of Nicosia. Seminar

The Cyprus Museum in Nicosia hosts a one-day seminar titled Artistic Practices in Museums and Archives: Post-Colonial Perspectives from 5pm to 8pm. The event examines how contemporary art can serve as a tool for reinterpreting colonial and postcolonial collections and archives, opening new narratives and repositioning historical documents within a critical, present-day framework. Researchers, artists and museum professionals from Cyprus and abroad will take part. In English. Free admission.
